University of Hull gears up for The Allam British Open
Congratulations to Joel Hinds and Shayne Baillie – Joel winning the pre-qualifying event for the second year in a row … results below
With just over a week to go before the stars of the world tour begin their quest to become Allam British Open Champion, this weekend sees players fight it out in the Pre-Qualification event for the right to join the party and a place in the main qualification draws.
The weekend provides a unique opportunity for squash enthusiasts to be part of the oldest and most prestigious event on the world calendar.
Last year Derbyshire’s Joel Hinds won the event to claim the final local spot in the Men’s Qualifying Draw, and he’s back again this year in an attempt to repeat the feat. The Derbyshire 27-year-old, ranked #82 in the world, is top seed in a draw that features a host of Yorkshire players hoping to feature on the big stage.
Last year also saw local Hull favourite Fiona Moverley signal her intention to return to the world tour by winning the women’s Pre-Qualification event. Since then Moverley has had a great year and currently sits just outside the world’s top 50, earning herself a local spot in the main qualification without the need to play this weekend.
The University of Hull is a major partner of the Allam British Open and its Sports Centre will also be home to the full qualifying tournament, some of the men’s and women’s main draw first-round matches, and a full programme of Masters categories, attracting players from around the world.
The action starts on Saturday at 10.30am with finals scheduled for 3.00pm on Sunday afternoon and all spectators are welcome to attend free of charge.
