UPDATE:

TODAY at the Allam British Open – Day ONE

Sharpes the only English survivor on Day One

SP_3349The Allam British Open got under way at last, with men’s qualifying round one at the University of Hull sports centre – sixteen matches to play with the winners putting themselves just one match away from a place in the main draw.

It wasn’t a great start as far as the English were concerned, as all six home players in the top half of the draw failed to progress without taking a game. The Egyptians, on the other hand, enjoyed success with four out of four winners, Fares Dessouki creating the biggest upset as he beat fifth seed Adrian Waller. Meanwhile Malaysia are guaranteed a qualifier as Ong Beng Hee and Nafiizwan Adnan set up a meeting in tomorrow’s finals.

The bottom half of the draw proved more successful for home players as Charles Sharpes produced a straight-games upset against Mazen Hisham to become the only English winner of the day, while Alan Clyne added Scottish interest as he beat Eddie Charlton in their first meeting since an epic encounter in last year’s event. Tom Ford, just back from South Africa, made a valiant attempt to add to the English winners, but .ultimately lost out in a tough and entertaining battle with Nasir Iqbal.
