The second weekend of Allam British Open pre-qualifying events saw Finchley Manor Squash Club in Middlesex host a men’s draw, and the withdrawal of top seed Robbie Temple, the world number 66, opened up a good chance for some of the other competitors to take advantage and reach next month’s main qualifying draw.
After two wins each, the final was between second seed Ben Ford, and 3/4 seed Tristan Eysele, and it turned out to be an exciting marathon match lasting 78 minutes.
The fifth was neck and neck with Fordhaving the first of four match balls at 10/9 before finally taking it 16/14. Eysele had two chances to take the match but couldn’t get the final point.
Both players’ tiredness was evident in the fifth with 13 refereeing decisions compared to 5 in the whole of the previous four games.
Ford, the reigning British Open O35 Champion, joins Joey Barrington and Richie Fallows, who won their places in last week’s pre-qualifying events.
